Draping and model making reflection

Today was not my first time learning how to drape and I thought that learning it again was necessary. I was able to remember most parts because I first learned how to drape last year, but still found the tutorial helpful. I thought the process of measuring was self explanatory but also still a helpful reminder. I am having trouble coming up with ideas for my project but I plan to research so I can be more inspired.

I enjoyed working on Thursday because I was put into an area of my specialism that I had no experience with. Measuring and scaling down was easy, but I found myself struggling to put together my model. I was having trouble bending the wire into shape even with pliers, and the tape was not covering the piece the way I wanted to. Working with clay was the part I enjoyed the most, because it allowed me the ability to customize. I ended up choosing an alien-like figure, which came from the idea that I had never seen horns that made a full circle. I thought the morning period would be enough time to finish my figure, but I was still working through the clay after time was up. I think all of my model making skills could improve with time and experience. Making a figure for animation seemed easy after we started making a set model. I tried to challenge myself by picking an area of the building with stairs, so my model wouldn’t just include the door alone, but this proved to be much harder than I thought. I didn’t regret my decision, and I enjoyed learning how to use my knife to cut board properly, even if it meant numbing my finger from pressing so hard. This process also took longer than I thought it would, but I enjoyed the feeling of seeing a physical manifestation of my hard work, even if it was small and not to the extent of craftsmanship that I wanted.

After scaling down an area of the building, we traced the lecture theatre and made a model of that. Because my previous model took so long, I wasn’t able to add a lot of detail to my lecture theatre model, but I still appreciated this process because it taught me what my piece would look like interacting with the space.
